What it is
Cerebrolysin is a neuropeptide preparation derived from purified porcine brain proteins. It is recognised for neuroprotective and cognitive-enhancing effects via promotion of neuronal growth and repair, BDNF support, and reduction of neuroinflammation. It is widely used internationally for stroke recovery, vascular dementia, and traumatic brain injury rehabilitation.
Mechanism of action
Mixture of low-molecular-weight neuropeptides and amino acids that mimic endogenous neurotrophic factors. Modulates neurogenesis, synaptic plasticity, and BDNF/NGF signalling; reduces glutamate excitotoxicity and microglial inflammation.
Half-life: Cleared within hours โ daily IV/IM dosing for therapeutic courses.
Evidence summary
Multiple Cochrane and meta-analytic reviews support modest benefits in acute ischemic stroke recovery and vascular dementia. Trauma and TBI animal data show cognitive recovery; mood and anxiety pilot work is encouraging but small.
Typical dosing protocols
- 5โ30 ml IV/IM daily for 10โ20 days as a course
- Repeat 1โ2 courses per year
- Often combined with structured rehabilitation
Side effects & safety
- Generally well-tolerated; mild headache, agitation, or sweating possible
- Allergic reactions rare โ porcine origin
- Avoid in status epilepticus or severe renal failure
